Single Seniors: Is Seniors Dating A Scam?

By Tweenta Gooda

Everyone is looking for a soul mate, and single, divorced or widowed seniors are absolutely no exception. There are a plethora of dating websites devoted to seniors looking for love; unfortunately many of these websites also become tools for con artists to use to get close to unsuspecting elderly people to extort them. Seniors often wonder: Is seniors dating a scam, or can I truly find love?

The internet is an anonymous place where anyone can hide behind a false profile and pose as an authentic dater. However, single seniors can absolutely find love online the way everyone else does, keeping a few caveats in mind.

Never give out personal information too soon and do not include personal information in your profile. Give out a cellular number or email address as your first method of contact and take time to get to know the person. Use your instincts. If certain questions, suggestions, ideas or statements appear untrue, suspicious or deceitful, terminate all contact with the person immediately and inform the website administrator.

Take time to develop trust and build the relationship slowly. People interested in becoming emotionally involved very quickly usually have ulterior motives and prey on emotional vulnerability to extort. No one genuinely interested in dating should ask you any questions about your personal financial information or anything related to bank accounts, stocks, portfolios, inheritance or wills. Genuine daters furthermore do not ask for monetary favors or loans. Never entertain any monetary requests or favors. They are signs of con artists.

Do be extra suspicious if a relationship takes too long to develop. A relationship should unravel slowly, however, it should also progress forward. If the dater makes constant excuses about not being able to meet or call you and insists on maintaining contact only via email, he/she is not interested in meeting you and is possibly solely interested in extorting money from you.

If you do agree to meet someone, ensure that you do so in a public venue, at a reasonable hour. Inform a loved one about your intentions to meet the dater, and your expected time of return. Never accept a ride the first time you meet the person and arrange your own transportation.
